Eastern Regional Mon Valley Police Department

The municipalities of East Pittsburgh Borough, North Braddock Borough, and Rankin Borough have established the Eastern Regional Mon Valley Police Department (“ERMVPD”) to strengthen public safety and law enforcement services for the municipalities through the efficient utilization of resources and personnel.  The regional police department will provide policing services to approximately 8,143 residents.  The communities are vibrant, collaborative, and support their law enforcement professionals.  The communities are located less than ten miles from the City of Pittsburgh overlooking the Monongahela River plateau.

 

The Chief of Police will be responsible for working with the Police Commission in early formation of the police department.  Using 21st Century Policing standards and recommendations, the Chief will establish a professional policing culture with a strong emphasis on “trust and legitimacy.”

 

The Police Commission will support the efforts of the Chief to establish proper supervision of personnel, the adoption of professional policy to establish best practices, budget control and oversight, while being responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of sworn and non-sworn personnel.

 

The ideal candidate for Chief of Police shall possess exceptional leadership and management skills to lead the newly formed regional  progressive police department.  Candidates must have served at least 10 years in a supervisory/command position in a law enforcement agency. Candidates must have experience in managing a law enforcement agency including budgeting, planning, and personnel administration with exceptional skills and experience in administrative areas.

 

An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Police Administration, Public Administration, or related field is required; however, the Police Commission will also consider candidates whose resumes reflect continuing training and education in lieu of an associate or bachelor’s degree.  Graduation from the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the Southern Police Institute, NJSACOP Command & Leadership Academy or other recognized and equivalent law enforcement academic is preferred.

 

The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in modern operational police practices, planning, budgeting, contractual services, current law enforcement technology, public administration, personnel management, exceptional leadership skills, a commitment to continued law enforcement training and a focus on community policing strategies.  The ability to work cooperatively with elected officials, municipal administration, citizens, and civic leaders is required.

 

The successful candidate must pass a physical, psychological examination and drug screening.  A thorough background examination will be conducted. The candidate must be currently certified under Pennsylvania Act 120 (53 Pa. C.S.A. 2161) or able to obtain within six months of employment. This is a non-union full-time exempt position. The Police Commission is offering a generous wage and fringe benefits package that is negotiable based on candidate’s education, experience, training, and qualifications.
